Resource Specialist I

Primary Duties:

Upon completion of proper training duties include technical assistance and forestry services to landowners including preparation of tract/stand maps, collecting property and soils data, direct contact with clientele for reforestation and management planning. The successful candidate will support the district forester with delivery of all resource development/protection outreach programs including VFD capacity building, conservation education, fire prevention, and special projects. The Resource Specialist will also serve as a wildland firefighter and/or emergency responder on a statewide basis. Duties will include operation of heavy fire fighting equipment, use of hand fire fighting tools, and ground reconnaissance on wildfires.

Required Education and Experience:

Required Education: High School Graduate or equivalent is required. Preferred educational qualifications/training include being a graduate from a 2-year technical forestry school, a similar position with a company or other agency, a FF-1 and TPL-1 under NWCG, and the ability to utilize GIS/GPS programs. Certification and training in Project Learning Tree, arboriculture and other outdoor education programs and specific training will be required.Required Experience: Have or obtain a Texas Class A CDL and have a driving record within agency requirements. Good communication skills and basic PC-based programs and software skills are required.Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Have or obtain a Texas Class A CDL and have a driving record within agency requirements. Other Requirements and Comments:

Work is often outdoors and in harsh environment such as smoke, rough terrain, dusty roads, etc. Persons serving in emergency response operations must meet a physical fitness standard which includes successfully completing a two-mile walk in 30 minutes or less while carrying a 25 pound pack and obtain required NWCG training and Red Card Certification as determined by TFS Red Card Committee. Emergency response may result in exposure to emotionally stressful situations for extended periods of time.
